Thorns and Roses -- Chapter 15
The drive felt weirdly normal. The whizzing headlights lulled me closer to sleep as my father drove us closer to the border, and I almost forgot where we were going and why. Now and then I'd remember, and my chest would thump, but just as quickly the droning of the road would mesmerize me again.
A week's father-son fishing trip. That's what everyone thought. We'd even gone so far as to purchase top-of-the-line fishing rods, acquire real permits, and stuffed our trunk with bait. When all was said and done and we were in the clear, we'd stop to fish for real. Both to celebrate, and to bring home something to show for our excursion.
